’Tis the season for… Stress!

There is so much to enjoy about the holiday season, from decorating to holiday parties, picking special gifts for family and friends, holiday baking, movies, and traditions. That said, with so much to get done, this time of year can also be stressful. Now more than ever we need to make self-care a priority — with stress management at the top of the list.

Here are our top tips to help you manage stress this holiday season:

Deep Breathing Exercises – Did you know that taking deep breaths with long, slow exhales actually signals your brain to relax? Breathing deeply is one of simplest yet effective ways you can decrease stress. The best part is you can do it anytime, anywhere. Make it a point to take a few deep, mindful breaths a few times a day to stay ahead of the stress. When you first wake up before you hop on your phone or being getting ready, before you eat lunch, when you get home from work (especially if you had to fight through traffic to get there!). Set aside a few moments throughout each day to focus on taking deep, diaphragmatic breaths to ease tension and reduce stress.

Eating Healthy – Nutrition is the cornerstone of health and wellbeing. When it comes to stress, certain nutrients can actually help support the mind and body. Start your day off right with a solid, protein-packed breakfast. Incorporate healthy fats like avocado, fish, pastured eggs, and grass-fed meats. And of course remember to eat your veggies, especially your leafy greens.

Drink a Cup of Tea – Feeling stressed? Soothe yourself with a warm cup of your favorite tea. Mint, green tea, passionflower, and barley tea are a few of our relaxing faves.

Remember Your Vitamins – B vitamins, magnesium, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to stress, mood, and overall health. Unfortunately, many people on the Standard American Diet are deficient in many of these nutrients. Consider a high quality supplement, but be sure to check with your doctor or nutritionist to address specific concerns.

Get Moving – Exercise is a great stress buster! It releases endorphins, which are your body’s natural “feel good” chemicals. Exercise is a great way to naturally manage stress as well as boost mood, weight loss, and overall health. Need help with motivation or learning how to workout for your goals? Stay Hydrated – In addition to making you feel hungry, dehydration has been shown to negatively affect mood. Get the recommended 8 glasses of water a day to stave off stress and promote health.
